There are three wheelchair taxi vans available in Gisborne. It is recommended to book in advance for during the week and weekends.

Buses Gisborne District Council has two wheelchair accessible buses operating to and from the city centre in Bright Streetand the outer suburbs. Self propelled wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and small mobility scooters are able to go on the buses.

No service is provided for rural areas outside the city, or coastal and rural townships.

Disabled Parking CBD

The central business district from Customhouse Street to Derby Street has 18 specially marked mobility parks. These parks are wider than normal for wheelchair access. All parks have their own parking meter. The parks are clearly marked with blue paint and wheelchair symbols painted on the road. There is also a sign on the footpath.

Overseas tourists need to either:

Email CCS (Crippled Children Society) Gisborne admin@ccsdisabilityaction.org.nz before they travel to New Zealand to obtain a temporary Mobility Card or phone (06) 867 1249 CCS 7 Ormond Road Gisborne on arrival to organize a temporary card while here in Gisborne.

Eastwoodhill Arbotetum
Eastwoodhill Arboretum, the National Arboretum of New Zealand, encompasses 135 hectares of exotic and native trees, shrubs and climber plantings.
Due to the terrain at Eastwoodhill Arboretum some tracks are unsuitable for all. A limited mobility trail is signposted around the Homestead Garden and arboretum. This trail has been designed to allow access to the more level areas of the arboretum, keeping in mind the needs of individual visitors.
To assist visitors with restricted mobility, the arboretum offers the following services:
Mobility scooter & Wheelchair
Available at the Visitor Centre free of charge. Strictly for use on the mobility sign posted track only.

Four wheel drive chariot vehicle
Highly recommended for senior citizen groups, visitors with restricted mobility and those on a tight schedule. The ‘chariot' is able to seat up to 10 people comfortably
